Food Grade Ion Exchange Resins for Hard Water Softening & Pure Water Preparation

Ion exchange resin is a kind of high-molecular polymer with functional groups. It is often used to remove cation and anion ions, metal ions in electroplating waste liquid, and to extract rare earth elements and precious metals from depleted uranium ore. Here, we will introduce ion exchange resin from the following aspects for your reference. Ion exchange resin with different functional groups has different chemical properties. Choosing the right ion exchange resin can improve the work efficiency while reducing ion exchange resin breakage and extending their service life.

Identify the chemical properties of ion exchange resins by functional groups
  • Strong acid cation resins. It contains strong acid functional groups like sulfonic acid group (-SO3H), easy to dissociate H+ ions in solution and appear strong acid property;
  • Weak acid cation resins. It contains weak acid functional groups like carboxylic acid group (-COOH), easy to dissociate H+ in solution and appear weak acid property;
  • Strong base anion resins. contain weak acid functional group like quaternary amino group (-NR3OH, where R is a hydrocarbon group), dissociate OH- ions in solution and appear strong base property;
  • Weak base anion resins. It contains weak base functional groups, such as primary amine group (-NH2), secondary amine group (-NRH), tertiary amine group (-NRR), dissociate OH- ion in water and appear weak base property;
  • Chelating resins. It is a kind of crosslinking functional polymer materials that can form multi-coordination complex with metal ions.
Choose ion exchange resin by pore structure
  • Gel ion exchange resin. It is made of pure monomer mixture after dehydration condensation or polymerization. It is transparent and has a smooth surface and homogeneous gel structure. The molecular gap is 2–4 nm; When there is no capillary pores absorb water in the dry state, it displays microscopic pores. It cannot remove organic matter and easily contaminated by organic matters.
  • Macroporous ion exchange resin. It is made of pure monomer mixture after polymerization. Pore-forming agent needs to be added during polymerization. It is opaque and has a rough surface and heterogeneous gel structure. Its pore size can range from a few nanometers to thousands of nanometers. It has both gel pores and capillary pores and their sizes and shapes are not changed as environmental condition changes. In addition, it is easy to absorb polymer organic matters, and easy to be regenerated, and has good pollution resistance.
Choose ion exchange resin by application
  • For water treatment industry: pure water and ultrapure water preparation; treatment of wastewater containing chromium in electroplating;
  • For food and beverage industry: liquid sugar refining, ash removal, decolorization; xylose decolorization; starch sugar desalinization and decolorization;
  • For pharmaceutical industry: citric acid and other organic acid decolorization, antibiotics and other natural drugs decolorization and refining;
  • For hydrometallurgy industry: precious metal ion separation and purification.
