Correct Maintenance of pH/ORP Sensors

Maintenance
Sensor maintenance in progress

pH/ORP sensors, as devices for measuring the pH value and oxidation-reduction potential of solutions, require regular maintenance and care. This is crucial for ensuring measurement accuracy, extending their service life, improving work efficiency, and reducing maintenance costs. By maintaining and caring for the instrument sensors, you can ensure their reliability and performance over the long term use.

Maintenance

  • The pH sensor should be soaked in a protective cover with a 3.0 mol/L KCL solution to keep it moist and avoid dry storage.
  • In the process of using, the attachment on the sensor surface can be rinsed with 0.01 mol/L HCl or NaOH solution, and then rinsed with water.
  • After processing the sensor with the above method, if the slope range still cannot be restored, it confirms that the sensor has completely failed.
  • When the platinum ring surface of the ORP sensor is dirty, you can rinse it with 0.01 mol/L HCl or NaOH solution, and then rinse it with pure water.
  • Passivation of the platinum surface caused by strong oxidation or reduction will affect the sensor's response potential. Toothpaste or fine sandpaper can be used to polish the platinum surface, and then rinsed with pure water.
  • It is recommended that the cleaned sensor be used after being immersed in a 3.0 mol/L potassium chloride solution for 6 hours.

Precautions

  • The pH/ORP sensor belongs to an electrochemical sensor, and it can also lose efficacy for long-term storage. Therefore, it is not recommended for long storage.
  • After replacing the new sensor, the instrument must be calibrated with the new sensor.
  • Do not remove the protective cap when the pH/ORP sensor is not used.
  • It is not advisable to use the pH sensor to measure the medium containing carbon tetrachloride, vinyl chloride, and tetrahydrofuran.
  • It is recommended to use a PC shell sensor in the water treatment process. For chemical measurement, please select the PPS material shell sensor.
