Electronic Ballasts – Limiting Current and Generating Instantaneous High Voltage

Electronic ballasts are electronic control devices that use semiconductor electronic components to convert direct current or low-frequency alternating current voltage into high-frequency alternating current voltage, and drive the operation of low-pressure gas discharge lamps (germicidal lamps), halogen tungsten lamps, and other light sources. Their main function is to control the current and voltage of electrical equipment, preventing problems such as overload and short circuit. Under the action of high-frequency current, gas discharge lamps can emit light without producing high-voltage ignition, and there is no flickering sensation in the lighting tube.

  • High voltage produces and causes the breaking of the rare gas inside the lamp.
  • After the lamp is started, it acts as a ballast (current limiter), allowing the lamp to work normally and stably.

Gas discharge lamps have a higher starting voltage and a lower discharge maintenance voltage. After the lamp is started with high voltage, the voltage drops, and the current increases. Without restraint, the lamp current will continue to increase until the lamp is destroyed. Therefore, a ballast matching the type and specifications of the lamp must be connected in series in the lighting circuit of the discharge lamp. This provides the high starting voltage needed to start the lamp and restricts the lamp current to stabilize within the specified range.
